Police have released the suspect in the murder of a Hope, East Coast Demerara, nonagenarian, who was found dead with marks of violence in his kitchen on Tuesday.
Police Commander of Region Four ‘C’, Senior Superintendent Khalil Pareshram, told Stabroek News that the suspect was released yesterday on bail and investigators are still probing the matter.
The suspect was released after the stipulated 72 hours for detainment expired and police being unable to gather enough evidence to detain him further.
Sukhnanan Dugi, called Henry Sukhnanan, 90, a pensioner of Lot 6 Hope Lowlands Public Road, East Coast Demerara died as a result of trauma about the head and body according to an autopsy performed by Government pathologist Nehaul Singh.
Police investigations have since revealed that Sukhnanan, who resided alone, was last seen alive on Monday August 31, at around 4.00pm.
According to police investigations, the man’s lifeless body was found by his niece, who was making her routine checks on Tuesday morning.
Police said the woman went to the house at around 11 and observed Sukhnanan’s slippers at the top of his steps and upon entering the house saw what appeared to be bloodstains on the floor in the vicinity of sitting room. As she ventured into the kitchen the woman saw Sukhnanan’s lifeless body lying under the kitchen sink with his head and upper body covered in blood.
She immediately summoned the police and the body and scene were examined by investigators.
The pensioner was found with two gaping wounds to the back of his head and a third wound to the right side of his face. The left side of the face was also swollen and there were wounds also on his right hand and wrist.
A piece of wood, suspected to be the murder weapon was recovered along with a bloodstained piece of cloth on the floor, police said.
