A carpenter who was struck down by a speeding car on Tuesday night, along Dennis Street, Sophia, died while receiving treatment at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH).
Fifty-one-year-old Joseph Semple of Lot 201 ‘C’ Field, Turkeyen, was riding his bicycle on his way home, when he was struck down by motor car PXX 5407, driven by a 30 year-old resident of Pattensen, Turkeyen.
According to the police, while in the vicinity of the ‘Black and White’ access road, Semple rode across the road and ended up in the path of the car.
It was stated that the front right-side bumper of the car collided with the left side of the bicycle. The force of the impact caused cyclist and bicycle to be thrown some distance away.
He was picked up in a semi-unconscious state and rushed to the GPH, where he remained a patient in the Intensive Care Unit until he succumbed on Wednesday.
Merlyn Fordyce, wife of the deceased, told Stabroek News she was at work when she heard about the accident.
Prior to leaving for work, she explained that she was awaiting the return of her husband before heading off to work.
However, at about 7:10 pm, not more than 20 minutes after arriving at work, she received a call from a relative informing her that Semple had been involved in an accident.
She immediately asked to be excused from her duties and made her way to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
However, due to the COVID-19 restrictions, she said she was allowed into the compound but not permitted to see her husband.
It was not until the following day that she saw her husband, who by then was on life support in the Intensive Care Unit. He was suffering from internal bleeding and had undergone surgery.
On Wednesday, at approximately 3:30 pm Fordyce said she received a call requesting her presence at the hospital and upon arrival was informed that Semple had died.
A post-mortem examination revealed that he died from multiple injuries.
Semple is to be buried on September 12.
