Three more COVID deaths recorded

Guyana now has a total of 1750 coronavirus disease (COVID-19)  cases after 47 additional COVID-19 cases were confirmed today and three additional deaths have also been recorded bringing the total number of deaths to 51.

AIi to seek UK, Caribbean help for police

Facing a major security crisis just over a month since taking office, President Irfaan Ali announced last evening that he is mobilizing help from the Regional Security System (RSS) of the Caribbean and the UK government to bolster the investigative capacity of the police force as they probe the murders of three teenagers in the village of Cotton Tree as well as the “criminality which led to the disruption of lives along the Region Five corridor.”

Gov’t projecting GDP growth of 48% to 51%

The People’s Progressive Party/ Civic (PPP/C) government yesterday tabled a $329.5 billion budget for the year 2020  projecting Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth this year within the range of 48.4% to 51.2% but with the country’s overall deficit to  increase to 6.5% of GDP.

Two days after a doctor attached to the Bartica Regional Hospital told relatives of 78-year-old Samuel Wilson, a former Toshao of the Indigenous community of Batavia in Region Seven that the elderly man was suffering from a “minor problem,” the former Toshao died from the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).

Dear Editor, I grew up in West Berbice at Blairmont Estate which is situated between Rosignol Village in the North and Ithaca Village in the South; the Estate was and still is populated predominantly by Guyanese of Indian descent while the population of the two villages is predominated by Guyanese of African descent; a significant portion of my school-mates were of the latter grouping.
