Minister of Public Works, Bishop Juan Edghill yesterday disclosed that some $2.7 billion has been allocated for Culture, Youth and Sports of which $805.3 million is for sports.

Edghill made the disclosure during the presentation of the Estimates and Expenditure for the Fiscal Year 2020 in his budget presentation to the National Assembly.

Additionally, Edghill disclosed that $185 million has been allocated for the National Sports Commission (NSC) to accelerate works on the synthetic tracks in Regions 6 and 10, as well as the purchase of sports gear and ground enhancements.

He said that in the area of sports, the new administration will look to revitalize the national sports programme…“while simultaneously reconfiguring how we undertake them in the context of the pandemic. This year we are going to be undertaking initial work on mini sports stadiums – in Regions 2, 6 and 10, and the Guyana-China Friendship Park.”

The allocations are part of the 2020 Emergency Budget, which was in excess of $306B.

Recently at a media conference, Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo noted that the masses may question why the PPP/C tabled such a large budget with only three months remaining for 2020.

The reason for this, he explained, was because a substantial part has already been expended by the previous David Granger-led A Partnership For National Unity + Alliance For Change (APNU+AFC) coalition administration.

Efforts to contact the new Minister of Sport, Charles Ramson Jr. yesterday for an immediate reaction proved futile.
