The Ministry of Home Affairs yesterday warned about the blocking of roads and setting of fires to people’s property.
The warning came days after what started out as a peaceful protest on Sunday, over the murders of teenaged cousins Isiah and Joel Henry, degenerated with road users being attacked and a number of houses being torched and stoned.
The main access road in the regions was blocked with old machinery, pieces of wood and tyres at several locations, including at Number 5, Bellevue, Number 28, Number 40 and Hopetown, resulting in the disruption of traffic.
The situation appeared calm yesterday and the roads were open for the free flow of traffic.
In the statement, the Ministry of Home Affairs urged members of the public to only participate in peaceful protests.
“The Ministry of Home Affairs is reminding the general public that it is unlawful to erect roadblocks and to set fires on the road or to private property. Protestors are urged to undertake peaceful protest action,”
the statement said.
It added that the Guyana Police Force is mandated to maintain law and order and to ensure that “criminal elements” do not take advantage of the killing of the innocent for “nefarious” gains.
As such, the Ministry said that the public’s cooperation with the police is essential to law and order.
