A young mother of one was murdered on Wednesday night in an attack that was allegedly carried out by her former partner, who police say fatally stabbed her in a jealous rage.
Lunisa Peters, 24, was killed at her aunt’s Lot 97 Supenaam Public Road, Essequibo Coast home, where she had moved after breaking up with her ex, with whom she had been living at Golden Fleece.
According to a Guyana Police Force statement, the attack was carried out around 11.30 pm on Wednesday by the suspect, who was visiting at the time.
According to the police, Peters and the suspect previously shared a common-law relationship and were living together until they separated when Peters moved and went to her aunt’s house at Supenaam.
Nevertheless, the suspect visited the home on Wednesday and was invited inside. However, while they were sitting, the police said, Peters’ phone rang and she answered it and the suspect heard a male’s voice on the other end. The man became annoyed as a result, snatched Peters by her hair and dragged her into the kitchen, where he grabbed a knife, before taking her to the bathroom and stabbing her.
Peters’ aunt, who heard the commotion, raised an alarm and the suspect ran out of the house and made good his escape on foot.
Peters’ younger sister, Shameeza Ramphal, told Stabroek News that she had warned the now dead woman about allowing her ex-boyfriend to continue to visit her.
Ramphal, who resides in Berbice, disclosed that she had been contacted by her sister on Tuesday and invited to visit. She, however, refused. “I talk to her Tuesday afternoon around four and she tell me everything is okay and I turn and tell her I got a feeling that you’re not okay,” she recounted.
She explained that she told her sister that she could not leave her husband and their three young children in order to visit her. She also said she did not “have a good feeling about going.” Ramphal then added that she told her sister, “You still got the man still coming by you, what you left the other day,” and she warned her that if something were to happen to her “it would be trouble” because the family did not know much about the relationship.
She also disclosed that her sister had a friend abroad who would help her financially, while the father of her daughter would maintain the child.
Ramphal received the news of her sister’s death yesterday morning from their younger sister. “It very hurtful to hear this, man. I feel so shock. I didn’t even eat my lunch, I didn’t eat anything,” she said.
Ramphal added that her mother, who is working in the interior, was notified of Peters’ death. “My sister call me this morning and said that they get on to she and that they’re bringing she out with a boat,” she explained, while noting that the rest of their family is living in Moruca.
Additionally, Ramphal said that she wants the suspect to be brought to justice as she noted that he has children and he would not want any of them to meet a similar fate as her sister’s. “…He would not like if somebody do he daughter it because he got big kids. He would not like people do it to he and he must see as a human being he must think that what he doing is wrong. Before you do somebody something, leave them alone. You didn’t give life, don’t take life. That is it. It very hard for me to lose my big sister and she’s very young,” Ramphal said.
