A Land of Canaan man died on Monday after ingesting a pesticide following what police suspect to have been an attempted murder-suicide.
Divisional Commander of Region 4 (b) Senior Superintendent Kurleigh Simon confirmed that an autopsy found that the cause of death of Mahendra Persaud, 40, of Land of Canaan, East Bank Demerara, was ingestion of a pesticide.
Simon told this newspaper that Persaud allegedly wounded his wife around 11pm on Monday. He said that after the attack, the woman and her son vacated the premises and Persaud’s lifeless body was found on Tuesday by a relative who related to the police that foam was seen at the man’s mouth.
The police said that Persaud and his wife had domestic problems and as a result, he attacked and chopped the mother of his children. The woman, who received chop wounds to her hand and chest, was treated at the Georgetown Public Hospital and discharged.
