One of the latest COVID-19 casualties has been identified as 65-year-old Alfred Gonsalves, who was hospitalised after experiencing breathing problems.
Gonsalves, a Sophia resident, spent 10 days in the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) before he passed away on Thursday.
According to statistics released by the Health Ministry, 52 persons have died since the first COVID-19 case was confirmed in March.
Gonsalves’ relatives told Stabroek News yesterday that he developed a cough more than three weeks ago. As the days went by the cough got worse and just over a week ago when Gonsalves started having trouble breathing he was taken to a hospital.
A relative noted that Gonsalves had been bed-ridden for seven months.
Following his breathing problems, he was was taken to the St. Joseph Mercy Hospital for a checkup.
There, he was diagnosed with pneumonia. “They say is pneumonia in the chest he got because the x-ray show that the chest deh cloudy, cloudy, and when he breathing you can hear how he struggling to breathe because it loud and it sound like he gat to try hard fa breathe,” the relative explained.
On the same date he was taken to the St Joseph hospital, the relative added, Gonsalves was transferred to the GPH’s transition ward, where he was tested for the disease. When the tests results returned, it was revealed that Gonsalves was infected with COVID-19.
