West Indies Women’s wicketkeeper/batter, Shemaine Campbelle is enthusiastic about the five-match T20I series against England which gets underway in just under two weeks.
With the Caribbean side already in England, Campbelle recently engaged the media via Zoom conference where she shared her thoughts on the series.
The 27-year-old Guyanese explained that she, like many of her teammates, was happy to be back on the field, having last played a match during the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup back in March.
“Obviously for us it’s a great feeling coming back to play women’s cricket, “she said.
“For all of us it’s a real big task and we are just going to look forward to having real good cricket here in England,” she added.
Campbelle reiterated the fact that the Caribbean was passionate about the cricket but said that while the break was welcomed, it is now time to get back to business and perform.
She indicated that the team was more mentally and physically prepared since the World Cup with most of the players using the down time to fine tune their skills.
Campbelle also expressed, “It’s very important for us, coming out back and playing cricket as a group and a unit. We would just going to go out there and play and enjoy the sport because we are known of playing T20s and enjoying it.”
The right handed batter shared similar sentiments as head coach, Andre Coley, who contended that the batting will need to play a major part and step up if they are to be successful in this series while adding that execution will be critical.
She revealed that from what she has seen so far, the batters have shown improvements while noting that they are showing signs that they want to play and are willing to work hard.
“So far all the girls have been looking good. I think for us as batting everyone has been improving over some time but I guess for the couple days we’ve been here I’ve seen some progress with the batting and we just need to keep that momentum going,” Campbelle added.
“For us, the key is just to go out there and play hard cricket, from the team we have been building up from training thus far I think everyone has been going pretty good and we just need to keep that momentum and take it into the game and if we keep doing that I think we will come out victorious in these five matches,” she added. Campbelle acknowledged the England Women’s team was a strong team but said that the familiarity among the two sides could play a factor while the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic could work to even out any advantage and create a level playing field since both sides are now returning to cricket.
The first ball bowls off on September 21.
