For the second time in just over a month, bandits broke and entered a building which houses the Roman Catholic Church and carted off a quantity of cash and other valuables.
A member of the church, Colin Smith on Saturday told Stabroek News that the incident occurred sometime on Wednesday night at 222 South Road and Wellington Street, Georgetown.
The building is owned by the Roman Catholic Church. It houses the Catholic Youth office and the Catholic Media office which puts together the well-known Catholic Standard newspaper.
Smith said the bandits gained entry to the building by removing a window. A number of items including an undisclosed amount of cash, a microwave and a laptop were stolen.
According to Smith, the discovery was made on Thursday morning when the cleaner reported for work. He said upon arrival, the woman noticed the door was open and the office had been ransacked.
An alarm was raised and the police were alerted. Smith said a number of police officers visited the scene during which they obtained statements and fingerprints.
Stabroek News was informed that the matter is being investigated by the police. No arrest/s has yet been made.
The Roman Catholic Youth Office in a Facebook post addressed the incident.
“We are sad to inform you that the Roman Catholic Youth office building was broken into once again, last night (Wednesday) and the office ransacked. The bandits gained entry by taking out a window, stole cash, a fan, a microwave, a laptop, stove and other items,” the post read.
This is the second break-in to have occurred at the building for the year so far.
In July, thieves had broken and entered the building after which they lit a number of small fires before carting off several items.
There was also similar incident in October, 2018. On that occasion thieves had ransacked other sections of the building including the Youth office and stolen several items including a projector, computers and some tools.
