Two more COVID-19 patients succumb

The Ministry of Health yesterday confirmed the deaths of two persons who tested positive for the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19), taking the country’s death toll to 64.

The latest casualties were identified as a 71-year-old man from Region One, who was receiving care at a medical facility, and a 63-year-old man from Region Four.

In a press release, the ministry said samples were collected from both at the time of admission and subsequently tested positive for COVID-19.

It noted that health officials have contacted all relatives and persons to facilitate contact tracing and rapid assistance to everyone who may have been exposed to the now-dead persons.

The ministry yesterday also announced that 75 additional cases of COVID-19 were recorded.

According to the COVID-19 dashboard that was posted on the ministry’s Facebook page, the 75 new cases were detected from the 220 samples that were processed. As a result, Guyana has now recorded a total of 2,102 cases of COVID-19.

Although the ministry said there were 75 new cases, the numbers provided from Region One, which recorded four cases, Region Three, which recorded nine new cases, Region Four, which recorded 41 new cases, Region Five, which recorded one new case, Region Seven, which recorded nine new cases, and Region Nine and Ten, which both recorded one case each, accounted for 66.

The dashboard also revealed that 16 persons are in the COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit (ICU), 66 persons in institutional isolation, 644 in home isolation and 86 persons in institutional quarantine.

Up to last night, 64 persons who were infected with the disease had died, while 1,314 persons were listed as having recovered.

The ministry reminded all Guyanese to observe the COVID-19 Emergency Measures, which are in effect until September 30, 2020. The measures require correct and consistent use of a face masks when leaving home; maintaining the six feet physical distance from others and the need for good hand-hygiene to help reduce the spread of COVID-19.
