Guyanese boxer Lennox ‘2 Sharp’ Allen has received moral support from his manager Steven Heid following his recent defeat at the hands of Cuban/American, David Morrell at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, California.
It was the Guyanese’s first professional defeat but Heid, who described Allen as a “real champion” backed him to come off the ropes.
“Tough times don’t last, tough people do. Lennox is a real champion and has made Guyana proud,” the manager told Stabroek Sports.
He added: “He showed his heart and true grit going 12 hard rounds and even dominated at times. Unfortunately, the decision didn’t go our way, however, Lennox will be back dominating.”
The scorecards read (120-108), (119-109), and (118-110) all scored heavily in favour of Morrell who earned the interim version of the World Boxing Association (WBA) super middleweight title. Allen, who subsequently spoke to Stabroek Sport after the bout attributed the loss to inactivity.
“It’s just a setback for a major comeback. I just spoke to my managers and promoters and we want to get back into the ring as soon as possible.
“Ring rust was definitely a factor, it definitely caught up to me, I should have let my hands go some more,” said the southpaw who had not fought since last February.
His former manager Carwyn Holland agreed with the 35-year-old’s assessment of being ‘ring rusty’ and he too highlighted the Guyanese’s character to place him in a good position to put that loss behind him and recover.
“Allen’s loss was one mainly because of ring-rust and to a lesser extent the chances he took on the ropes. I say ring-rust because if you check his ring activity over the last few years you will see that he has been largely inactive, but had to take his chances against active tough opponents,” Holland disclosed.
“He was on par with the skill level of the Cuban, but the latter got the edge on being more active. It is also my view that Allen had more power than his opponent and rocked him at times. Moving forward, I would get Allen 2-3 quick stay-busy fights and then get him a rematch,” the former manager further revealed.
