A Mon Repos man was struck dead in an apparent hit and run accident in the wee hours of yesterday morning.
Dead is Devanand Bansie, of Lot 27 Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara, who had just hours before been celebrating his 23rd birthday.
Kavita Reddy, the sister-in-law of the deceased, told Sunday Stabroek that following an exchange of words between the deceased and his wife, Gomattie Reddy, he announced that he was going to leave and return to his family.
She noted that it was a threat he frequently made whenever getting into an argument with his wife.
Moments after, Reddy noted, Bansie also got into an argument with her step-father and began using indecent language towards him while standing out on the road.
She told this newspaper that she came out to him several times and scolded him, while asking him to come inside and retire to bed. She added that she eventually let him be because she was afraid that since he was intoxicated and had argued with her sister, he could have become violent
Reddy said her sister eventually went to bed and she too decided to sleep and locked the door to the home before doing so.
She said Bansie eventually came calling at least four times. She explained that on the first three occasions he told her that he was going to leave and she replied by telling him to go to bed and sort out the problem in the morning. She added that she ignored him on the fourth occasion.
She said that while he was outside, he had a piece of wood, which he was using to hit the road. After a while, she did not hear anything and she said it was unclear if he had left to go somewhere else.
Reddy noted that it was after 1 am when she last spoke to him and at about 4 am, when her mother woke up to begin cooking, she noticed a police vehicle outside. It was not long after that they realised that something had happened to Bansie, who was found on the street with several injuries to his body.
A police report disclosed that the deceased was seen lying motionless on the southern side of the Mon Repos Railway Embankment, in front of his residence with injuries.
The paramedics were summoned to the scene and pronounced him dead.
A post-mortem examination is to be done on Monday.
Reddy said footage from a nearby surveillance camera revealed that Bansie was hit by a car and that the driver kept going afterward.
Reddy’s grieving wife called on the authorities to ensure the family gets justice.
Bansie was described as a funny and generous person, despite his imperfections. (Readawne Henery)
