Feroz Mohamed, the contractor who struck and killed a fish vendor while driving along the Zeeburg Public Road, has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving.
Mohamed, 44, of 571 Zeelugt New Housing Scheme, East Bank Essequibo, appeared before Magistrate Zamilla Ally-Seepaul at the Leonora Magis-trate’s Court on a charge that he caused the death of Somatti Persaud, 39, last Saturday.
Mohamed, who was represented by attorney Bernard DaSilva, was subsequently granted bail in the amount of $200,000 and matter was adjourned until November 5th.
Police had said that Persaud died after she was struck off of her bicycle and the driver subsequently said that he fell asleep at the wheel.
According to a Guyana Police Force statement, enquiries disclosed that Persaud was cycling west on the southern side of the Zeeburg Public Road while the car was proceeding behind her at a normal rate of speed.
Police said the driver claimed he fell asleep and awoke when he felt an impact.
“As he came out from his vehicle, he observed that he was stationary at a concrete fence on the southern side of the said road and a female with a pedal cycle was seen lying on the southern grass parapet motionless with injuries about her body,” the statement added.
The driver was assisted by a passerby, who took the woman to the Leonora Cottage Hospital, where she was seen and examined by a doctor. She died while receiving treatment.
The statement noted that a breathalyser test was conducted on the driver but no trace of alcohol was found on his breath.
