A Kilcoy, Corentyne fisherman was yesterday charged with killing his former friend, Alexander Yhap at Kilcoy, Corentyne last week.
The accused, Arjune Mohabir, 22, a fisherman of Lot 80 Kilcoy Squatting Area, appeared at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Peter Hugh, who read the charge which alleges that at Kilcoy Squatting Area he unlawfully killed Yhap.
Mohabir, who was not required to enter a plea was placed on $250,000 bail and will return to the Albion Magistrate’s Court today.
Yhap, also known as ‘John’, 25, a fisherman, of Lot 84 Kilcoy, Coren-tyne, sustained three stab injuries during the incident at a Superbet location two streets away from his house on Monday, September 14.
He was rushed to the Port Mourant Public Hospital and then to the New Amsterdam Public Hospi-tal where he later succumbed.
A post-mortem examination has since revealed that the father of two died as a result of the stab wound he sustained to his chest.
According to an eyewitness, Yhap and his wife, Mineisha Chandralall, also known, as “Angeli”, 22, were at a Superbet location in the village, when the suspect arrived just around 7 pm.
The eyewitness had said that Yhap and the suspect were imbibing in their separate corners when suddenly an argument ensued between the two. “Them start fight and then Piken just take out one Rambo knife and stab the boy pon underneath”, the man had noted.
The suspect fled the scene and ventured out to the Corentyne River with a fishing boat in hopes of escaping. However, police quickly located a boat and chased after the suspect and placed him under arrest.
The deceased’s wife had stated that her husband came back from sea two Mondays ago after a short trip which was as a result of an issue with his seine. She said they had ventured over to the hangout loca-tion when the incident happened just around 8 pm.
According to the woman, the suspect had it out for husband for a while, since they were involved in a previous altercation during which her husband sustained an injury under his chin.
According to residents, the accused on the day of the previous altercation had threatened Yhap that he would return to end him.
Yhap’s brother, Vishnu Phillip, 16, a fisherman, relayed, that he resides and works with his brother. He said, on Monday evening he was at home when he was informed that his brother was attacked, “Me pick up one cutlass and when me run go me can’t able see me buddy, me start cry”.
He said his brother sustained three stab injuries, pointing to his chest and under his arm.
