The Guyana Football Federation (GFF) has selected a 48-member provisional Golden Jaguars training squad for the Concaf World Cup Qualifiers next year.
This is according to a source close to the federation who spoke on the condition of anonymity.
According to the source, the provisional roster features both local and overseas-born and based players, with defender Miguel Scarlett the newest international recruit.
The squad which is divided by positions, includes goalkeepers: Akel Clarke, Quillan Roberts, Alex Murray, Sese Norville, Kyle McKenzie-Lyle, Shawn Adonis, Ronaldo Blair and Jonathan Vaughn.
The defenders are divided into three sections. They are (Right Wing), Samuel Cox, Jordan Dover, Miguel Scarlett (International), Sherwin Skeete, Nikolai Andrews, (Left Wing) Kadell Daniels, Liam Gordon, William Europe, Keanu Lawrence, Shemar Wilson, and (Central) Kevin Layne, Raphael Edwards, Terrence Vancooten, Eric Moore, Quincy Adams, Jeremy Garrett, Matthew Briggs, Reese Greenwich, Kevin Dundas and Marcus Wilson.
Similarly, the midfield contains four groups. They are (Central Midfield) Daniel Wilson, Warren Creavalle, Jamar Harrigon, Threvon Pluck, Darren Niles, Elliot Bonds, Curtez Kellman, Job Caesar, Clive Nobrega (Attacking Midfield) Keanu Marsh-Brown, Pernell Schultz, Ryan Hackett, Neil Danns, Kyjourn Marsh-Brown, (Right Midfield) Stephen Duke-McKenna, Kelsey Benjamin, Callum Harriott, Omari Glasgow, Nicholas MacArthur, Ravon Bailey and (Left Midfield) Terrell Ondaan, Delwyn Fraser, Trayon Bobb, Anthony Jeffries, Dorwin George.
On the other hand, the Forwards are Sheldon Holder, Marcel Barrington, Emery Welshman, Benjamin Opara, and Osafo Simpson.
The source also disclosed that a date and timeline for the commencement of training is yet to be finalized by the GFF due to the ongoing covdi-19 situation.
According to the source, only approval from the government through the national Covid-19 Task Force will provide the necessary green light for the commencement of preparation for the important and impending international assignments.
Concacaf, following discussions with FIFA, opted to reschedule the World Cup Qualifiers which was initially scheduled to commence next month. Guyana was drawn in group-F in the first stage of the Concacaf World Cup Qualifiers. The Golden Jaguars were placed with traditional rival Trinidad and Tobago, St. Kitts and Nevis, Puerto Rico and the Bahamas.
They were set to commence their path to Qatar on October 8th away to Trinidad and Tobago. Slated to follow was a home fixture against The Bahamas on the 13th. Meanwhile, the Golden Jaguars were pegged to compete in November away to St. Kitts and Nevis on the 13th before concluding against Puerto Rico on home soil four days later.
Upon the conclusion of the first round, the second Stage will consist of the respective group winners facing off in a home and away series. The eventual victors will advance to the final round which will consist of eight teams. Following the conclusion of the final round, the top three teams will qualify to the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. The fourth placed finisher will contest the Confederation Playoff.
Guyana’s best showing in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers occurred in the 2014 edition, as they romped to the third stage of qualifying. This is the penultimate section of the confederation’s qualification process.
