The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) today said that a joint patrol comprising ranks of the GDF and the Guyana Police Force came under fire yesterday from the Venezuelan shore during a routine joint patrol om the Cuyuni River.
The GDF release said it is believed that the gunfire came from Syndicato gang members.
None of the ranks was injured and they returned fire.
The GDF said that “aggressive” joint patrols by the Guyanese security forces have since been intensified in the Cuyuni River area.
It noted that Guyana’s border with Venezuela is more than 1,000 kilometres long and patrols are conducted on a routine basis.
Yesterday’s occurrence is not new and several measures are being explored, the release said.
