The appointment of the members of the National Sports Commission (NSC) and the naming of a new Director of Sport should be done within a month.
These and other details were disclosed by Minister of Sport, Charles Ramson Jr., yesterday.
Ramson Jr., who was recently criticized by Shadow Minister, Jermaine Figueira, for not expeditiously naming a Director of Sport since taking office last month, asserted that “We are not a government that is going to break any laws in order to make an appointment.”
“The NSC has to be set up before we make the appointment of a Director of Sport, everyone should be acquainted with what the law says,” he added.
Ramson Jr., continued “It has to go through a process and I would like to see it done within a month.”
Figueira was also critical of the approach by Ramson Jr., on the direction in which sports will need to take as it relates to COVID-19.
“To date Mr. Speaker, the minister with responsibility for sports cannot announce a protocol for any sports disciplines in Guyana,” Figueira had stated.
The new sports minister told this publication that based on the next review by the COVID-19 Task Force, he will be guided and only then will he be able to announce safe protocols for local sports in the 592.
Meanwhile, quizzed on whether gyms will be able to open their doors that have been closed since March following the task force review, Ramson Jr., stated “There is no discussion at the moment, but there will be.”
Further, Ramson Jr., revealed to the National Assembly that the Anna Regina Ground in Essequibo, the Mackenzie Sports Club in Linden and the Albion Community Centre Ground in Berbice are the proposed venues where the multi-billion dollar, multipurpose sports facilities will be constructed.
President, Irfaan Ali had stated that the construction of the edifices are in keeping with the promises made by the new government on their campaign trail.
