A Guyanese woman has drowned after a boating mishap near the south eastern coast of Saint Maarten just over a week ago.

According to a Saint Martin News Network report, Guyanese couple Andrea and Vish Singh, who went fishing in Back Bay, found themselves in difficulty due to the rough seas and were swept off the rocks. Andrea drowned as a result, while Vish was reported to have suffered severe injuries.

The report explained that on September 19th, the Coast Guard received information from the St. Maarten police, which related that the couple were in a drowning situation in the water at Back Bay.

The couple had been fishing when Andrea reportedly fell into the water after a wave surge swept her.

The report said that her partner, Vish, jumped into the water in an attempt to help her, but was unable to.

A fisherman who was nearby informed that authorities of the mishap and offered his cooler as a floatation device.

The Saint Martin News Network report added that Vish was eventually able to get himself out of the water onto the rocks, and back to safety after many attempts to retrieve his wife.

A Coast Guard Metal Shark patrol was immediately dispatched to the location in order to assist and found an unconscious Singh laying in the water and was able to bring her out to the pier at Great Bay, where an ambulance was stationed.

CPR was administered to the woman but she had already passed.

The report said that the couple owned “Singh Construction Company” and were residents of Steward Estate Oyster Pond. It also noted that the couple were known figures in the Guyanese community on the island as Vish was a well-known cricket player and together they operated a cricket bar for a number of years.
