West Indies seamer, Shamilia Connell, yesterday said that she was disappointed at losing the series and blamed the bowling department.
The West Indies women’s team yesterday surrendered the five-match series against England when the lost the third T20 International.
Speaking to the media via Zoom after the match yesterday, Connell said: “Yes it is a very disappointing loss to England in the third T20I. I believe we fell down again in the middle overs (batting) and bowling department. We’ve been getting some good partnerships at the top with Deandra [Dottin] but we haven’t been able to capitalize on that,” she stated.
Dottin once again played a lone hand with the bat, scoring 63 from 59 balls. This is her second half century of the series and was the first time her side scored at more than a run-a-ball.
The batting also involved a shuffling of the order with regular opener, Hayley Matthews, coming in the middle which Connell suggested was to add depth to the middle order.
“I guess it was to put some depth in the batting we worked with some top order batters to put some depth in the lower order,” Connell said.
The change was fruitful as the duo added 48 runs for the third wicket while Lee Ann Kirby, who made three runs, shared in a 30-run opening partnership with Dottin.
Summarizing the batting display, the 28-year-old Connell said that it was just an issue of execution of the last five overs that made the difference.
While the batting has come under heavy criticism since the ICC T20 World Cup earlier this year, Connell pointed out that it was a learning process and they are getting better.
“I guess that our batting has been failing for a while now but it is a process and everybody is getting better day by day, it’s not going to happen overnight but I believe we are going to get there,” she said.
Connell also said the bowlers were not pleased with their efforts but said that there were signs of improvement.
