President of the West Demerara Football Association (WDFA), Orin Ferrier says he will not seek re-election at the WDFA’s Electoral Congress, scheduled for the first quarter of 2021.
According to Ferrier, who was elected to office in 2015, the time is right for the association to acquire new leadership via its election in 2021.
He said, “The election is supposed to be held next year and I wouldn’t be figuring in any election for the next term. I have done enough in my stint and I will let someone else take the reins, someone younger with more energy. I think I have done my stint when I took the reins in West Demerara.”
Ferrier was elected to office in October 2015 under the watchful eye of the Normalization Committee. His executive committee at the time of his ascension to office, comprised 1st Vice- President Christine Schmidt, 2nd Vice President Alexander Clarke, 3rd Vice-President Dellon Elexey, Secretary Adrian Giddings, Treasurer Delyon Josiah, Assistant Secretary/Treasurer Kip Austin, and Ordinary Members Leroy Chilcott, Orvill Bobb, Adio Wright, Travis Bess and Kenneth Thomas.
According to Ferrier, “About five years ago I took over the association and in the period that I have been in charge, I have seen the association become national champions, produce representatives in both genders on the national programme, have had success at the junior level as we are currently the GFF U15 Champion with Eagles and become the GFF Senior Knockout Champions with Den Amstel. We have many members in the youth teams, as well as a few players in the senior and women’s teams.” He added, “I am happy with the progression of the association under my tenure, I am happy with how things have progressed. Before the association did well for the countryboys but now we are becoming winners and successful in many of the things that we are trying to do.”
“I will be there to help out anyone that shows that they are capable of keeping things going but not in any senior or executive position. I would give any assistance and guidance and that should be enough, let someone new take over the reins. Someone within the region would be most suitable as they would know what’s going on locally.
According to Ferrier, a date for the staging of the congress is yet to be confirmed. He added that the current health crisis could affect the staging of the forum and that the guidance from the GFF will be sought in any attempt to conduct the constitutionally mandated event.
“No date has been set for the election, it is supposed to set for the first quarter of the year. However the current situation has created a lot of delays worldwide and could affect the staging of it. But that is going to be up to the decision of the GFF, they would have some say as they when the associations can stage its election being the national body. I have not heard anything. We would need to discuss within the executive and how we would like to move forward and take guidance from the GFF, as to whether they think it’s the appropriate way to go forward.”
