The Athletic Association of Guyana (AAG) has been forced to cancel the remainder of its 2020 activities due to the COVID- 19 pandemic, however the body’s aim is to make an early start to next season.

While the association successfully staged activities in the first quarter, they were unable to conduct the National Youth and Junior and the flagship National Senior Championships.

According to President of the AAG, Aubrey Hutson, the association will now look ahead to making an early start to the 2021 season. Athletes could return to competing as early as next month.

“We are therefore looking to make an early start to the 2021 season with our usual Cross Country Championships.”

Hutson disclosed that those championships could get underway from next month depending on clearance from the Ministry of Health.

“Depending on the clearance from the Ministry of Health, we will start these events from November 1 while using the World Athletics guidelines to determine whether these events can be held with or without fans.”

Hutson pointed out that “Our athletes are our greatest assets and it is our intention to protect them.”

He concluded by stating “It is my opinion that the World Athletics COVID-19 guidelines are sufficient to protect our athletes from the possible spread during these championships.” (Emmerson Campbell)
