The Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) has begun their much talked about schools chess programme.
“We are pleased to announce that the elite training for the most advanced juniors has begun with coach Atanu Lahiri, International Master,” a release from the federation stated.
The GCF is appealing to the public to recommend juniors who have the potential to join the programme for free.
Meanwhile, a second group of juniors – termed advanced beginners and who are mostly under 16 years old – commenced training yesterday.
There will also be a third group for beginners that is to be scheduled.
Earlier in the year, the Federation, in an effort to raise the standings of the sport locally, held discussions with three prominent International Chess Federation (FIDE) personnel for guidance to design a programme to produce elite local players.
The board’s objective of that discourse centered around creating a virtual chess incubator where local chess players will have one-on-one world-class training from reputable FIDE accredited GMs and IMs.
