Minister of Sport, Charles Ramson Jr., will engage in a second round of discussions with associations beginning this week, perhaps as early as tomorrow.
According to Ramson Jr., the talks will be much more in depth and informative adding, “these would be working sessions.”
Soon after being sworn in, Ramson Jr., scratched the surface by holding preliminary talks with most of the associations at the National Resource Centre.
The Minister told Stabroek Sport yesterday that “The idea is for us is to sit with the associations to plan their individual programmes. Every sporting association is different with unique goals and issues that they face. So these would be working sessions to deal with major issues that they are facing and the way forward.”
Ramson Jr., further disclosed that Power Point presentations will be made by the associations.
Upon taking up the post as Sports Minister on August 4, Ramson Jr., pledged to depart from the ad hoc manner in which sport is treated in Guyana. His grand plan is to implement strategies to run sports as a business.
“We cannot have sport operating in an ad hoc manner. In order to create a sports development programme and also a sports economy as well, we need to treat sports as a business, because sports is a business too,” he declared.
He also mentioned that sports is more than just hobbies and staying fit. It is one of the largest sectors in the world and could be very much transformational for the country by drawing our human capital and the talents of our young people.
