United Kingdom-based Virgin Atlantic Airways has engaged the government in talks on potentially launching a Guyana to London service, according Minister of Public Works Juan Edghill.
Edghill told Stabroek News he held his first meeting yesterday morning with officials from airlines who are assessing the potential of the route.
“Before the end of the month we are expected to meet again,” Edghill said.
He explained that the agenda for the follow up meeting will be to advance discussions and proposals put forward for consideration.
Should Virgin Atlantic begin servicing the route, it will be the only airline to offer a direct connection from Guyana to Europe.
Then Minister of Public Infrastructure David Patterson in 2019 had announced that the airline was aiming to serve the Guyanese market.
“They were on a Skype call to myself and the Minister of Finance on them coming here… This was the Director of the airline with oversight for routes,” Patterson said.
Virgin Atlantic operates flights to several Caribbean destinations, including Barba-dos and Jamaica.
