Dear Editor,
It’s interesting to see the continuing circulation of the Lexus story. At best, it seems a bit of an anomaly, difficult to appreciate or understand: Why would a country, second only to Haiti, in its grinding poverty, import a Lexus for a public official?
Unfortunately, it may very well not be such an anomaly after all. Some of us do remember that the last time around, occasioned by another changing of the guards, when another big one “insisted” that he “must” get what another big one had gotten for the same big position. It was, of course, the same gentleman who had also insisted that he “walked with Jagan” but in a convenient moment of amnesia forgot that Jagan also insisted “it would be difficult for anyone, to want a Desoto in a donkey cart economy”.
The only anomaly here, it would seem, is that some of our friends would like to insist, that in all of this, there is no class.
Yours faithfully,
Rishee Thakur
