Newly-appointed West Indies women’s team head coach, Courtney Walsh, will look to hit the ground running as he begins with some off-field training.
Appearing on the Barbados radio programme, Mason and Guest on Tuesday, the former West Indies pacer, revealed some of his plans for the immediate future.
With no tours expected for the rest of the year and most of what was planned interrupted due to the Novel Coronavirus pandemic, Walsh believes it is appropriate to begin with individual programmes and training.
“There is nothing major on the horizon from what I gather,” he said.
“We are going to have a little break which would give me a time to get to know them and put things in place and perspective in terms of programmes and what we want to do and deal with individuals as well and just a get to know you basis to set some goals and standards as much as we can do without being on the field of play so when we hit the field of play we sort of hit the ground running,” Walsh explained.
When asked about some of the challenges he is anticipating, the head coach said the biggest challenge will be to get the players back to a consistent level and restore their confidence and self-belief.
“I think, based on my little stint with them in the last World Cup in Australia, there is a lot of work to be done to get that confidence, self-belief and smile back on their faces.”
He accepted that there has been a dip in form for the 2016 T20 World Champions and acknowledged that with the present situation, gatherings would not be applicable.
However, as soon as possible, Walsh wants to have a camp in place.
“We might not realistically get any camps but as soon as that is available that is the first thing I want to do to have a camp in place and see as much of the players as possible,” he said.
Since his appointment, Walsh has pledged to leave no stone unturned in his efforts to get the side up to speed.
He said that his heart was with West Indies Cricket and that he would be willing to do whatever it takes to restore the smiles on the faces of the Caribbean people and pride to West Indies Cricket.
