Dear Editor,
Recently in the press while discussing the Bridge to link Suriname and Guyana the statement was made that the entire Corentyne River belongs to Suriname. This sounds like an error which needs to be corrected. Not too long ago there was a border conflict with issues arising due to fishing rights in the Corentyne River. This was supposed to have been settled with Suriname respecting the demarcation of Guyana’s territory which includes part of the Corentyne River. Although a very good development initiative, any Bridge Project under consideration to connect the two countries should first ensure that this border issue has been resolved in a manner that is permanently acceptable to both countries.
Yours faithfully,
