Director of Social Services, Whentworth Tanner, during a recent interview with Stabroek News, disclosed that two wards at the Palms Geriatric Home are currently being renovated as part of efforts to have the facility as “elderly friendly” as possible and up to standard.
Tanner explained that it was being done for maintenance purposes, something he said they did from time to time when repairs are needed in any particular area that might be deteriorating.
He said the intention is to ensure that the environment in which the residents reside is as “elderly friendly” as possible and up to standard.
He added that once officials recognize that there is a specific need for residents in the Palms population, they try to put it in place.
According to the director, the home is always working to keep in stock, supplies such as wheel chairs, for its immobile residents to make it possible for them to move around, as well as to stay one step ahead because when equipment suffers wear and tear, it is no longer useable.
Tanner shared some of the plans to observe the Month of the Elderly and mentioned that activities will be limited, given the COVID-19 situation and the scare the institution previously experienced when both residents and staff were directly affected by the coronavirus.
On the 1st of October to celebrate the International Day of the Elderly, the institution held a special luncheon, catering for residents of the Palms which was overseen by the administrator.
The institution also in-tends to conduct work with the privately-run homes, but was unable to confirm exactly what that would be, as they are presently still reaching out to the homes to ensure they are able and willing to participate in what they have planned.
