A site visit of the National Track and Field Centre at Leonora is scheduled today by Minister of Sport, Charles Ramson Jr., and the top brass of the Athletic Association of Guyana (AAG).
The visit will entail a thorough walk through and inspection of the facility earmarked to host the 50th edition of the CARIFTA Games in 2022.
This is according to President of the AAG, Aubrey Hutson.
Said Hutson: “The visit to the track with the Sports Minister is to bring him up to speed with what is going on at that facility. That is the facility earmarked to host the CARIFTA Games, so we are going there for a site visit to see exactly what has to be done.”
Hutson disclosed that the resurfacing of the track, adding of stands and the repositioning of the long and triple jump area will be among the talking points of the visit.
“We will look at the resurfacing of the track, we will also discuss the warm-up facility that was started but not completed.
We also have to look at erecting two other stands on the southern side of the ground and the proposal of putting the long jump pit on the southern side as well as against it being on the western side across the curve.
It being on the southern side will create a more spectator friendly view of the long and triple jump events” Hutson posited.
Hutson also stated that redesigning of the roof to better the visibility of cameras, putting rubber in the call room and creating another stand in the mixed zone where the athletes will interact with the media will also be discussed.
The AAG head then concluded by stating “So far the Minister has said to us that he is sold on CARIFTA, so we are moving ahead to ensure that we have a true reflection of the 50th anniversary of the Games and what it means to us as a CARICOM nation.” (Emmerson Campbell)
