Dear Editor,
On October 9, 2020 I had the honour of attending a meeting with the Minister of Sports Mr. Charles Ramson Jr. as an executive of the Albion Cricket Club, at the Albion Sports Complex and was overjoyed to hear the plans the government has for that facility. As everyone knows, the Albion Sports Complex is the home of the Albion Cricket Club where the first ever one day international match in Guyana and the West Indies was played in 1977 between the West Indies and Pakistan and I was overwhelmed with nostalgia listening to the minister saying that when the facility is finished in two years’ time we will have international cricket again at the ground.
I was even more elated to hear that the government will also build an indoor sports facility at the ground so that the youths of Berbice will be able to play table tennis, lawn tennis, volleyball, basketball and other indoor sports and hopefully unearth hidden talent that we may have in Berbice. Let me take this opportunity to thank the minister and his government for their vision to develop sports in the ancient county so that we can produce professional athletes not only in cricket, but in other sports also.
I would also like to thank the minister for accepting at short notice the invitation by the members of the Jai Hind Cricket Cub to have a look at their ground with a view to assisting them to upgrade the facility. I can report that the minister was very impressed with the work that the members have done to make Jai Hind probably one of the best community grounds in Guyana and pledged, upon request, that he will assist them with some lights and repairs to the fence. Listening to this minister, I am sure he will keep his promise. Once again, thanks Minister Ramson.
Yours faithfully,
Imtiaz Baccus
