Minister of Sport, Charles Ramson Jr., along with members of the Athletic Association of Guyana (AAG) conducted a site visit of the National Track and Field Centre at Leonora yesterday.
The visit entailed a thorough walk through and inspection of the facility earmarked to host the 50th edition of the CARIFTA Games in 2022.
This is according to President of the AAG, Aubrey Hutson.
Said Hutson “The visit to the track with the Sports Minister brought him up to speed with what is going on at that facility. That is the facility earmarked to host the CARIFTA Games, so we visited there to get a first-hand look of what has to be done ahead of the Games.”
Hutson disclosed that the resurfacing of the track, adding stands and the repositioning of the long and triple jump area were among the talking points of the visit.
“We talked about the resurfacing of the track, we also spoke about at least erecting two other stands on the southern side of the ground and the proposal of putting the long jump pit on the southern side as well as against it being on the western side across the curve.
It being on the southern side will create a more spectator friendly view of the long and triple jump events” Hutson posited.
Hutson also stated that redesigning of the roof to better the visibility of cameras, putting rubber in the call room and creating another stand in the mixed zone where the athletes will interact with the media will were discussed.
The AAG head then concluded by stating that Ramson was a keen listener and very receptive adding that “So far, the Minister indicated to us that he is sold on CARIFTA, so we are moving ahead to ensure that we have a true reflection of the 50th anniversary of the Games and what it means to us as a CARICOM nation.”
