President of the Athletic Association of Guyana (AAG), Aubrey Hutson is elated with the election of Guyana’s Aliann Pompey to the Executive Committee of the World Olympians Association, and looks forward to engagements with the former four-time Olympian.
The 42 year-old Pompey was elected as an Executive Committee Member of the World Olympians Association with responsibility for female athletes in the Americas over the next four years, following the Association’s virtual General Assembly on Thursday.
“It is an exceptional accomplishment which will augur well for athletes in this part of the world,” said Hutson in an invited comment yesterday.
Hutson added “Kudos to Aliann and the work that she has put in and the people who would have supported her in achieving this position. We look forward to working with her for the sustenance and upliftment of the Olympic Dream and the opportunities that she can bring to athletes in this part of the world, particularly Guyana. We look forward to having talks with her and creating the necessary opportunities and support that the athletes in Guyana can receive as a result of her being in the position that she is in.”
He concluded by stating “I am very happy to know that someone from Guyana has been elected to this position. It means then that Guyana is beginning to get the kind of recognition that is tirelessly pursued over the years.”
Following Thursday’s election, Pompey, the 2002 Commonwealth Games gold medalist in the 400m said this to the media, “I’m thrilled and honoured and I look forward to working with the various member nations of the Americas in making sure our Region continues its pattern and history of success.”
Pompey, who represented Guyana at the 2000, 2004, 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games, received the nod against the head of the Barbados Olympians Association; Frieda Nichols, a former mentor “I want to thank Frieda Nichols who I ran against. She has been one of the most instrumental people in assisting me over the years, giving me a lot of advice and I owe a lot of my successes to her.
Pompey, who is also Chairperson of the PANAM Athletes Commission, expressed special thanks to President of the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA), K.A. Juman-Yassin and GOA Committee Member Geoffrey Sankies who nominated her for the post.
Juman-Yassin shared the following sentiments: “I am elated at the Aliann Pompey’s election. She has served Guyana well as an athlete. Aliann has a wealth of experience being the head of the Panam Athletes’ Commission and she is actively involved in helping many young Guyanese athletes. I am certain that she will do well.”
