A security guard was struck down and killed on Monday morning at Sheriff and Dadanawa streets, Campbellville, while returning home from work.
Deon Martin Moniz, 58, of Lot 58 Canary Road, East La Penitence, was struck by a car while riding his motorbike.
According to a Guyana Police Force statement, around 5.15 am, a car driven by a 43-year-old resident of Mocha, East Bank Demerara was proceeding north along the western lane on Sheriff Street, while Moniz was proceeding south along the eastern lane on the same street on his motorcycle. As both vehicles approached Dadanawa Street, the police said, the car turned east and collided with Moniz, who was thrown into the eastern gutter on Sheriff Street.
He was subsequently picked up in an unconscious state by the driver and public-spirited citizens, who transported him to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH), where he was pronounced dead.
His body was later taken to the Memorial Gardens Mortuary and a post-mortem examination is scheduled for today.
The driver of the car is in police custody assisting with the investigation.
Natasha Moniz, a daughter of the deceased, described him as a kind and loving person who placed others before himself. He was a father of four.
