A man was fatally chopped on Monday at Kwebanna Village, in the North West District and police have since arrested the family member he identified as his assailant before he took his last breath.
Kamal Wilson, 35, who was a resident of the village, was attacked close to his home by the 23-year-old male relative.
In a press release, the Guyana Police Force said enquiries revealed that about 7.30 pm Wilson went to check his generator, located about 20 feet away from his home, when he noticed the relative approaching him with a cutlass in his hand.
The release stated that the accused unexpectedly dealt Wilson several chops to his head, neck and shoulder, causing him to call out for help.
The release added that Wilson subsequently ran into his home and locked the door behind him, while the accused escaped on foot.
As a result of Wilson’s screams, his father subsequently responded and found the wounded man lying on the floor with several chop wounds and covered in blood.
Wilson was able to inform his father of the attack carried out by the family member. The police said the two men had no prior issues before the attack.
After a report was made to the Acquero Police Station, police ranks visited the scene and escorted Wilson to the Kumaka District Hospital, where he was admitted as a patient. Wilson later succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment around 11.16 pm.
The accused was later contacted and told of the offence committed, cautioned and arrested.
He remained in custody assisting with the investigation up to yesterday, the police said.
Kwebanna is currently days into a lockdown that was instituted due to a surge in COVID-19 cases in the village.
