Zaheer Hussein, who was accused of killing his former father-in-law, Alexie Gomes, was yesterday committed to stand trial at the High Court.
Attorney Latchmie Rahamat, who is representing the family of the deceased in the proceedings, told Stabroek News that Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan yesterday concluded the preliminary inquiry into the charge against Hussein and found that there is a sufficient case for him to answer for the offence and committed him to stand trial at the High Court before a judge and a jury.
Hussein, of Lot 1 Riverview, Ruimveldt is accused of beating 54-year-old Gomes with a piece of wood on Father’s Day. Two days after the assault, Gomes fell ill and had to be hospitalised and later succumbed in hospital.
Stabroek News had reported that on June 21st, Gomes left his Lot 6 Riverview, Ruimveldt address to purchase beers at a nearby shop. On his way to purchase the beers, he noticed his former son-in-law with his grandson and he decided to approach the two to speak to his grandson. The father of the child, however, wasn’t pleased and an altercation ensued during which the assault occurred.
Gomes had returned to Guyana from New York on March 3rd but was forced to stay here after the closure of international airports, due to COVID-19, prevented him from returning to the United States of America.
