Soca diva Melissa ‘Vanilla’ Roberts, has dropped another captivating single called “Grab On”, her first in eight months since “I am 592” saw her earning third place in this year’s Soca Monarch Competition.
“Grab On” is a refreshing piece for the popular artiste, who penned the song owing to a personal experience. “The song was written in a time when confinement due to COVID-19 was a must. When you have a lot of time on your hands, you actually do a lot of thinking… For me, it was a good opportunity to express how I was feeling about a particular individual without actually being bold enough to say it face to face. Like the song says, ‘Baby, I was too shy to let you know I want you to grab on and hold on me,’” the singer expressed.
However, while the song shares Melissa’s feelings, the video tells another story. She has always maintained that Vanilla onstage and Melissa are two different personalities. She had said in a previous interview that stepping on stage revealed a different side of her that was on display for the public. The Melissa personality, the real, true side is only shared with family and close friends.
She explained that her life away from the stage has always been private which she believes is why there are rumours and opinions by persons on what they perceive her private life to be. The video is influenced by these rumours.
Just as “I Am 592” is loved by fans, she hopes “Grab On” will become a hit also despite its unique nature.
The song and video were released both on radio and social media including YouTube, Instagram and TikTok. It is also available on iTunes, Apple Music, Spotify and a number of other streaming and downloading sites.
