The Ministry of Public Works (MoPW) yesterday awarded some 100 contracts for weeding and cleaning across regions 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6.
According to a statement issued by the ministry, around 75% of the awardees were new entrants. Junior Works Minister Deodat Indar was reported as saying that there were over 600 bids, from which the awardees were selected. He noted that each contractor is expected to employ on average a total of five persons, meaning employment for over 500 persons in total.
While noting that government intends to put money in the hands of small businesses, Indar explained that “big contractors” were “not allowed to bid in this process.”
The awardees were urged to give taxpayers “value for their money” as they do their part in the beautification of the various communities. Permanent Secretary Vladim Persaud called on the contractors to take pride in their work and to remember that they are working for the people of Guyana, the statement added.
