The charred remains of a couple were discovered last night following a fire at an Eccles, East Bank Demerara house.
The couple has been identified as Cindy Ann Moses 35, the proprietor of a stationary shop and Leeroy King 34, a barber and father of three, who recently moved into the house, located at 1139, Phase Two, Eccles, East Bank Demerara.
The motive behind their deaths was still to be determined by investigators up to late last night.
Relatives of the deceased couple were in disbelief at the scene. The couple, who previously resided at Diamond Housing Scheme, moved into the house approximately three days ago, relatives said.
Neighbours last night recalled overhearing the couple arguing and shortly after, at approximately 8.40 pm, they saw the house on fire. It was at that point the fire service was summoned to the scene.
After the fire was put out, the charred bodies were found among the rubble in the interior of the house, which was gutted.
Police at the scene told reporters that the couple was found inside the first bedroom on the upper flat of the house. According to police, the couple appeared to have been hugging each other.
Police also said King started the fire.
Cindy’s brother, Anthony Moses, told this publication that news of the tragedy came to his family as a shock. The man explained that his sister was a very private person and did not reveal many details of her life to the rest of her family. He stated that he and his sister normally meet on Sundays and she never gave him any indication that she may have been in any trouble.
King’s sister, Shelly, said she was scrolling on Facebook where saw the breaking news headline about the fire. However, she ignored the story and continued scrolling but it was at this point another brother informed what had happened.
“He has a big voice but he always gets you laughing. We don’t know him as an aggressive person,” a cousin told reporters.
When asked if the couple shared an abusive relationship, the cousin said the family had no knowledge of anything of the sort but noted that like every relationship there were quarrels.
Just before press time, the charred remains were removed from the house and taken to the Lyken Funeral Parlour.
