Minister of Public Works Juan Edghill on Monday charged the newly-appointed board of directors of the Guyana National Shipping Corporation (GNSC) to spearhead the development of a modern shipping facility.

At an installation ceremony, Edghill said that with the oil and gas sector booming, the facility must be able to offer services that they will need.

He also told the directors that they must strive to ensure GNSC offers a competitive service. Edghill said that government is not prepared to offer subsidies to state entities that can be self-sufficient and sustainable as such he said that they must go after tenants who have outstanding sums for the company.

The minister further said that the board of directors much guarantee that GNSC maintains a high level of transparency and accountability.

Edghill underscored that with the new directors having experience in various disciplines such as engineering, law, financing and shipping, he is of the opinion that they will be able to lay the foundation for development to take place.

The current board is chaired by Euclin Gomes, attorney at Law, and comprises Andrew Astwood, Rajendra Paul, Oswald Chisholm, Miguel Choo-Kang, Claudette Rogers, Dmitri Alli and Desmond Morian.
