The Tiger Creek bridge in Region Eight which collapsed on Tuesday should be repaired in three weeks.
This disclosure was made by the Regional Engineer with responsibility for Region Eight, Wendell St Pierre, following an on-site assessment, a release from the Department of Public Information (DPI) stated yesterday.
According to the release, the Ministry of Public Works (MoPW) has crafted a three-week timeline for the completion of emergency works on the bridge in Potaro-Siparuni, Region Eight.
“Works would have already started. The contractor is Abeja Trotman and materials are being mobilised,” the engineer informed. He added that from a preliminary assessment the bridge appears to have collapsed due to a damaged beam.
While the emergency works are ongoing at Tiger Creek, commuters are being advised to use an alternate route to Mahdia and take no chances crossing the creek while work is being done so as to avoid accidents and loss of property. The suggested route is an additional 28 kilometres, and it extends from the Konawaruk Road into Eagle Mountain Road, then into Mahdia. St Pierre acknowledged that it would be an inconvenience for commuters while the bridge undergoes reconstruction.
MoPW is providing technical assistance on the project, while the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission is tasked with executing the repairs.
The bridge collapsed on Tuesday while a heavy-duty truck was crossing. No one was injured.
