Gunmen hijack, rob Canefield driver and passengers

Two men armed with handguns on Tuesday morning hijacked a Canefield Settlement, East Canje, Berbice hire car driver after which they robbed him and his passengers of close to $1M.

According to information gathered, the driver, 49, of East Canefield Settlement, East Canje Berbice had collected a sum of $700,000 from the owner of a Superbet in Canje to transport to Georgetown.

He was reportedly heading out of the street after collecting the money with two passengers, a 54-year- old female vendor of Cumberland and a 43-year-old woman of Reliance Village, when the two bandits hijacked the car.

Stabroek News was told that the bandits walked in front of the man’s car with the firearm in their hands and ordered that he stopped.

According to information gathered, one of the bandits after entering the car began hitting the driver in his head while ordering him to drive to the Number 19, Corentyne area, at the back of a dam.

After arriving at the location they began demanding the money the man had collected, as they started to duct tape the victims’ mouths.

The three victims then handed over all the cash they had in their possession after which a car arrived at the location and picked up the bandits.

Stabroek News was told that one of the passengers had a medical document with information on her child in her bag and pleaded with the bandits to return it to her which they did.

The police were immediately contacted after the bandits escaped. Sources yesterday said that no arrest has been made.
