A bid to avoid riding into a puddle has landed a 67-year-old fisherman in a hospital bed, and resulted in the destruction of a car and two trucks.
Rajkumar Parbhu, of Success, East Coast Demerara, remains a patient at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH), where he is nursing a fractured rib and injuries to his back, his feet and his head.
The police said as a result of Parbhu swerving to avoid the puddle, a driver, Imran Khan, 36 of Phase 2 Good Hope, East Coast Demerara, who was proceeding in the same direction along the Montrose Public Road on Wednesday morning lost control of his vehicle and collided with a parked truck. Both vehicles and another parked truck all caught fire and were destroyed.
According to a police report, the accident occurred around 6.05 am. Police enquiries revealed that Khan, who was driving a car, PTT 9975, was proceeding west along the southern side of the southern carriageway of Montrose Public Road in the vicinity of Apex Education, when Parbhu suddenly swerved right from a pool of water.
The statement said Khan after witnessing Parbhu’s action applied brakes but the left side of the car collided with Parbhu. As a results of the collision, Parbhu fell onto the roadway, while Khan then lost control of his vehicle, causing it to crash into a parked truck on the southern side of the parapet. The vehicle then caught fire and destroyed two trucks.
The cyclist was picked up in a conscious state and taken to the GPH, where he is undergoing medical treatment.
Khan was taken into police custody.
A sister of the injured cyclist told Stabroek News that her brother was on his way to fish when the accident occurred.
