As the police await legal advice on possible charges, six men, including four Venezuelans who are suspected to be members of a Syndicato gang, have been released from police custody.
When contacted for an update, Guyana Police Force spokesman Assistant Com-missioner Royston Andries-Junor said that case file was prepared and sent to the Chambers of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal advice, which will determine the way forward in the matter.
He said the investigation is being handled by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID).
The police had said that the men were arrested on Ocotber 16th after a hotel at Port Kaituma, in Region One, was raided by a police team.
According to the police, the Venezuelans claimed that they work as miners in neighbouring Venezuela. However, investigators believed that they are members of a Syndicato gang.
Two of the suspects are Guyanese. They also said they work as miners.
The police had stated that the Venezuelans were arrested for failing to present themselves to immigration, while the two Guyanese were accused of aiding and abetting them to enter the country illegally.
During the operation, two ATV’s, $100,000 in cash and a quantity of suspected raw gold found at the premises were also seized.
