The Doobay Dialysis Centre is seeking donations to cover the cost of lifesaving dialysis treatments for some chronic kidney disease patients.
The Centre, located at Annandale, East Coast Demerara, has worked since 2011 toward providing treatment for patients who cannot afford dialysis treatment at private facilities.
The not-for-profit centre is run by Dr Budhendra Doobay, who recently made an appeal for donations to help support the treatment of patients who rely on the centre. He noted in a video uploaded to Facebook that the cost for treatment is US$75 per session for each patient and the centre is hoping that persons will donate to fund even one treatment for a patient. He said these donations can save lives, while noting that some patients cannot afford to pay at all for their treatment.
The centre provides dialysis treatment to over 100 patients.
In the video that was posted, some patients also appealed for donations while noting that the treatments they receive have been literally lifesaving. “I’m almost in tears. Without this dialysis service many of us would have already died,” one patient said before requesting that persons respond to the urgent appeal.
Another patient said that she started dialysis treatment after her kidney transplant failed and noted that the treatment is what has kept her alive. One other patient added that she has been on dialysis for five years and while she relies on her two children to help cover her treatment costs, it’s very difficult for her family. She said that sometimes her children are not be able to provide for her grandchildren because they collectively cover her bills when needed.
Dialysis treatment is needed for patients with renal failure to continue living a somewhat normal life. Treatment is needed at least three time a week. Back in 2018 the centre disclosed that 50 percent of its patients receive subsidy.
