The Upper Demerara Football Association (UDFA), the second largest association under the umbrella of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF), is constitutionally due to stage its Electoral Congress this month.
This was disclosed by a source close to the association who spoke on the condition of anonymity.
According to the source, the election is to be staged before the conclusion of November, following an initial extension from the federation in November of 2019.
“The UDFA election is due this month, the president’s two year’s reign ended this month. This same month it is scheduled to be hosted, there was an extension from the GFF because the association had some internal issues so the extension ends this month. The extension was given prior to the elapsing of the last period which was last year November.”
According to the source, neither the GFF nor the UDFA have officially reached out to signal intentions of respectively supervising and staging the electoral congress, adding that the possibility of another extension from the local governing body cannot be ruled out due to the ongoing health crisis.
“Remember football is currently dormant and everyone is now trying to get organized. The GFF has not reached out to date. That has not happened.
The UDFA has not reached out as well, there has been no movement on both sides, nothing has happened basically. The association is supposed to have elections but I am not sure or don’t know if it will happen. This is the due month though. However, another extension could happen, I feel that might happen. Another extension could happen until football recovers from the current covid-19 situation and then everyone can stage their elections”, the source said.
Efforts to contact incumbent president Terrence Mitchell for a comment proved futile. Several calls to his cellular phone went unanswered up to press time. Similarly, attempts to solicit a comment from Guyana Football Federation (GFF) General Secretary Ian Alves also proved futile.
The source further divulged that the duo of Akanni Blair and former UDFA President Collis Gifth are the individuals that have expressed interest in running for the top post, noting that their respective slate of candidates must be made public prior to the election.
“Akanni Blair and Collis Gifth are tipped to run for office. They have aspirations for the top post. They are the ones to date who are known to be supposedly vying for the Presidency. At the moment there is no one else that is being touted or talked about. You can run for office by slate so both parties will have to get their slates up and running before the elections commence.”
