(Trinidad Guardian) The T&T Cricket Board (TTCB) appointed-committee to handle the interviewing process for the post of national senior coach will begin their work on Wednesday. This according to an official of the board who spoke to Guardian Media Sports yesterday.
The board had set a deadline of last Wednesday for candidates to indicate if they were still interested in the job. This deadline was moved up until 4 pm yesterday.
The vacant position has attracted foreign interest. The board has gotten several applications from interested persons and included among them are coaches from Pakistan, South Africa, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
This is in addition to the locals who have shown interest in the job. So far, it is understood that incumbent coach Mervyn Dillon has reapplied for his job, as well as former T&T opener and Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR) assistant coach Imran Jan.
Red Force has not won the regional Four-Dday title since 2006 when Daren Ganga led the team to the crown. This was the first Four-Day title since 1985 when Rangy Nanan took T&T to glory. Prior to that, it was way back in 1976 when Prince Bartholomew led T&T to the title. On that occasion, it was shared with Barbados. Joey Carew hailed as a master tactician, had earlier skippered T&T to two titles in 1970 and 1971.
This year, T&T, under Dillon, finished second to Barbados when the tournament was called off due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic with two rounds to go. In 2014, T&T again came close finishing second to Barbados.
The Red Force is better known for its prowess in the shorter formats of the game. It dominated T20 cricket in the region before the advent of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL). It has represented the region at four Champions League tournaments (three times in India and once in South Africa) and has also won the most number of titles in regional 50 overs cricket, taking away 13.
