With only a few cases recorded, the Regional Chairperson of Region Two, Vilma DaSilva, has stated that the COVID-19 situation in the region is under control.
Thirty communities in Region Two have recorded cases of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) with Mainstay Lake recording the highest number since the region first detected cases of the virus.
As of Monday, the region had a total of 97 COVID-19 cases, which are distributed among Abrams’s Creek, Airy Hall, Anna Regina, Aurora, Capoey, Charity, Daniels-town, Dry Shore, Good Hope, Hampton Court, Kabakaburi, Karawab, Lima Housing Scheme, Lima Sands, Mashabo, Mainstay Lake, Maria’s Lodge, Middlesex, Onder-neeming, Perseverance, Pomeroon, Reliance, Richmond, Siriki, Suddie, Supenaam, Tapakuma, Vilvordeen, Wakapoa and Zorg.
Up to Friday, there were just over a dozen active cases.
DaSilva told Stabroek News that given the statistics, regional officials believe that the COVID-19 situation in the Region is under control. She said since the start of the local outbreak, regional officials have been conducting public awareness campaigns and this is still ongoing.
She said that while many persons are observing the preventative measures, there are still some who refuse to comply. “We still have a few persons who are not complying with the guidelines and we are looking at them and we have been trying to encourage and monitor them but you know we cannot be all over at the same time but we have to continue encouraging them to do the right thing,” she said.
Additionally, DaSilva said the region has been strict in ensuring that public transport operators do not exceed half their full capacity of passengers. She noted that no one has been charge for breaching any COVID-19 guideline as yet.
Meanwhile, DaSilva also said they constructed isolation facilities in the affected indigenous villages and noted that although the region has recorded a moderate number of COVID-19 cases, many are not found in the same area. “One village has only 1 case while in others there may be one household,” she said.
The region has recorded a total of three COVID-19 deaths.
