All-rounder Rovman Powell believes consistency and persistency will be the two ingredients necessary for West Indies to pull off a series win against hosts, New Zealand later this month.
The Jamaica Tallawahs’ captain is a key part of the West Indies T20I squad which will lock horns with the Black Caps in three matches on November 27, 29 and 30.
Following a controversy over the breach of lockdown rules, the team is out in Queenstown and has enjoyed some ‘fresh air’ and training.
“It feels good, you know we’ve been in quarantine for the last two weeks, quarantine was good and I think the team came up with some exercises, a little training and football here and there but it’s always good to come out of quarantine,” Powell stated during a recent interview.
As the first game draws closer, the 27-year-old revealed the mood in the camp is upbeat.
“I think it’s a pretty good mood, the guys are gelling pretty good, we had some nights where we lime together as a team and I think that builds good comradery and it’s just now for the other guys to join us,” he said.
But while the nights have been relaxing, the days have been long and hard not only for the right hander, but the team on a whole as they fine-tune their preparation.
According to Powell, “Leading up to the T20 series I am looking to fine-tune all three areas, we are not the best cricketers in the world, we’re always cricketers in training if you understand what I mean, always looking to improve our game and improving my game so I am looking to fine-tune all three areas.”
Powell posited, “I think the key to success is just as we did in Sri Lanka, we have to be consistent and precise in anything we do. Consistency at the international level is very important not just from an individual perspective but from a team perspective we have been a little bit inconsistent here and there so consistency is definitely what is going to get us this series.”
In addition to the T20 matches, Powell is one of the players from that squad touted to be part of two First-Class matches. He revealed that in these matches he will look to reinforce his all-round capabilities and do what is needed for the team.
“I am looking forward to it, I’m just looking to show my all-round capabilities, whenever I’m given the ball to put it in the right areas and get wickets, whenever I am batting, West Indies need batters who can bat long so I’m trying my best to go into those games and bat time, bat for a session, bat for two sessions,” he added.
