GPSU holding forum in recognition of men’s day

Dear Editor,

The Guyana Public Service Union in observation of International Men’s Day 2020 will be hosting a one day forum today to honour and recognize this day. This activity would be held at the Union’s headquarters, 160 Regent & Shiv Chanderpaul Drive, Bourda, Georgetown from 09:15 hours.

This year Men’s Day would be celebrated under the theme: “Better Health for Men and Boys”.

The day has grown from strength to strength over the years and now aims to address six key pillars as follows:

1.   To promote positive male role models; not just movie stars and sports men but every day, working class men who are living decent, honest lives.

2.   To celebrate men’s positive contributions to society, community, family, marriage, child care, and to the environment.

3.   To focus on men’s health and wellbeing; social, emotional, physical and spiritual.

4.   To highlight discrimination against men; in areas of social services, social attitudes and expectations, and law.

5.  To improve gender relations and promote gender equality.

6.  To create a safer, better world; where people can be safe and grow to reach their full potential.

Participants in the activity would be drawn from across various Ministries/ Departments/ Agencies.

The International Men’s Day website says this year’s theme promotes “the need to value men and boys and help people make practical improvements in men and boy’s health and well-being”, adding that “The concept and themes of International Men’s Day are designed to give hope to the depressed, faith to the lonely, comfort to the broken-hearted, transcend barriers, eliminate stereotypes and create a more caring humanity.”

Presenters at the forum will deliver speeches to participants on “Leading by example, Men and Violence against Women, Positive Values to the world and community.”

Yours faithfully,
